About this course

The EULAR Training course for clinicians and health care professionals to develop or improve practice in RMD-patient education consists of four modules (of approximately 10 hours work each), one on general considerations, one on practice, one on concrete realization of a programme and the last one on its future. All authors are experts in patient education and patients are partners in each module. Please note that not all modules open at the same time.

The medicine of chronic diseases differs from that of acute diseases and requires from the patient a set of continuous adjustments. The aim of patient education is the acquisition of skills enabling patients to perform a certain number of activities to improve their health and obtain a better quality of life. Patient education appears as an epidemiological, therapeutic and economic necessity and a practice well-suited to chronic rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases. The practice of patient education requires for the practitioner competencies of active pedagogy and cooperative learning to develop or improve practice in RMD-patient education.

The learning objectives are: understand the problematics of chronic rheumatism, understand issues of patient education, develop attitudes in the relationship with the patient, elaborate a programme of patient education, perform an educational diagnosis, design and animate educational workshops evaluate a programme and among different learning objectives.

The course is run entirely through the web. It will cover 4 modules, starting each October, followed by a final online examination. Upon passing the examination a EULAR certificate will be issued. If the course is not completed or the exam failed after the first year, the course will automatically extend for one more year without charge.

Participants who successfully complete this course are awarded with a certificate of completion. This certificate is recognised in France to be the equivalent of a 40-hour certification training course and allows the holder to practice patient education.

Module structure and final exam

Each online module deals with one particular topic and contains:

  • An interactive learning module with a set of clear learning outcomes
  • Generally, one/two in-depth discussions expanding on relevant clinical problems with an evidence-based discussion
  • One/two interactive typical clinical cases with appropriate multiple-choice questions and immediate feedback
  • A self-assessment section addresses core aspects of the module and needs to be completed (3 attempts are granted) before the next module can be started

The final examination will assess a sample of the learning outcomes from the whole course (45 marks) within 45 minutes. The examination is run annually at a given date and time period for which learners are notified well in advance. All learners are free to choose in which year they would like to take the examination. Learners should keep in mind that this course is a 1-year course with an additional year added automatically free of charge only if required.

EULAR extends sincere thanks to all authors and contributors for working on a voluntary basis and without compensation to create and regularly update its online courses!
