EULAR Online Introductory on Ultrasound Course

The EULAR Online Introductory Ultrasound Course is an electronic form of continuous medical education in rheumatology.

The course is run entirely through the web, designed for approx. 7 months of training. The course will cover 7 modules, starting each September and finishing in April (time available to study is shortened if you start after September), followed by a final online examination. Upon passing the examination a EULAR certificate will be issued. If the course is not completed or the exam failed after the first year, the course will automatically extend for one more year without charge.

The expected learning time per week is calculated around 2 1/2 hours but very flexible for the learners who can enter the learning system at any time and have available free of charge an extra year if needed.

It is our objective to offer theoretical basic skills on musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) showing different joint sites, in healthy subjects and in rheumatic diseases, using a wide variety of images and video clips. The course is being updated on a regular basis.

Knowledge and skills are targeted to the level felt to be appropriate for European rheumatologists who would like to acquire a basic theoretical knowledge on MSUS. Successful participants of this course will be able to continue their training by signing up for one of the yearly offered EULAR MSUS live courses (basic, intermediate and advanced) and eventually achieve the EULAR competency levels 1 and 2. (See competency procedures below as PDF) Local MSUS courses with EULAR endorsement can also be accepted for the competency process.

Module structure and final exam

Each online module deals with one particular topic and contains:

A main text on the module top with a set of clear learning outcomes
Two in-depth discussions expanding on relevant clinical problems with an evidence-based discussion
Two interactive typical clinical cases with appropriate multiple-choice questions and immediate feedback
A self-assessment section addresses core aspects of the module and needs to be completed (3 attempts are granted) before the next module can be started.

The final examination will assess a sample of the learning outcomes from the whole course (45 questions) within 45 minutes. The examination is run annually at a given date and time period for which learners are notified well in advance. All learners are free to choose in which year they would like to take the examination. Learners should keep in mind that this course is a 1-year course with an additional year added automatically free of charge only if required.

This course is not yet open for registration. Registration will open on the day of the EULAR Congress on 12 June 2019.

The course operates through the web for the duration of one year with an automatic extension of one year in case the modules are not completed after 1 year or if the exam is failed once. It will finish with an online exam and upon passing, with a EULAR Certificate. This course will expire in October 2019, with automatic extension: October 2020.
