Course description
The EULAR Sonography Course will be run simultaneously at three levels, basic, intermediate and advanced, each of them being a combination of lectures and hands-on scanning of models and/or patients with musculoskeletal disorders in small groups with experienced tutors. The course has been designed following the recommendations for the content and conduct of EULAR musculoskeletal ultrasound courses (Naredo E, Bijlsma JW, Conaghan PG, et al. Ann Rheum Dis 2008; 67:1017-22).The ADVANCED COURSE will focus on advanced technological aspects, research, complex anatomic areas and difficult pathologies, paediatric rheumatic diseases, overuse and sport related disorders, and non-musculoskeletal organs involved in rheumatic diseases such as skin, nail, lung, salivary glands, vessels, and nerves. It is designed for participants with previous performance of a minimum of 200 pathological MSUS examinations and attendance to a basic and intermediate MSUS course.
This course is one of the criteria for EULAR Competency Assessment in MSUS in Rheumatology – Level 1:
- criterion 1: Basic Level - Certification proofs for either: Basic EULAR MSUS course / Basic EULAR scientifically endorsed MSUS course / Other equivalent level of Basic MSUS course by National Societies / EULAR Scientific Member Societies (acceptance is dependent on EULAR).
- criterion 2: Intermediate level - Certification proofs for either: Intermediate EULAR MSUS course / Intermediate EULAR scientifically endorsed MSUS course.
- criterion 3: Advanced EULAR MSUS course.
- criterion 4: EULAR Online Introductory Ultrasound Course.
Learning objectives
- To update evidence-based knowledge and emerging research fields on MSUS in rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases.
- To score intra-articular and periarticular inflammatory activity and structural joint damage.
- To know advanced use of Doppler modes.
- To assess complex anatomic areas and difficult abnormalities.
- To assess abnormalities related to rheumatic diseases in the skin, nail, lung, salivary glands, vessels, and nerves.
- To know the role of MSUS in paediatric rheumatic diseases.
- To assess overuse and sport-related lesions.
- To know technological ultrasound advances.
Assessment & Certification
Upon successful completion of the course, participants who pass the practical assessment will receive a certificate, which will be available in their EULAR School user account.*Please note that 100% attendance is mandatory for course completion.

As part of your application, you must submit:
1. One PowerPoint presentation showing pathological images of the full range of conditions included in the basic and intermediate levels of the following joint regions:
- Shoulder
- Elbow
- Wrist & hand
- Hip
- Knee
- Ankle & foot
2. Certificates of completion for a Basic MSUS course and Intermediate MSUS course.
- Basic EULAR MSUS Course certificate / Basic EULAR scientifically endorsed MSUS Course certificate / Other equivalent level of Basic MSUS course by National Societies / EULAR Scientific Member Societies (acceptance is dependent on EULAR).
- Intermediate EULAR MSUS Course certificate / Intermediate EULAR scientifically endorsed MSUS Course certificate.
3. One signed EULAR Declaration form.
Optional: EULAR Online Introductory Ultrasound Course
- This course is highly recommended, but not mandatory for your participation. However, it is a requirement for EULAR Competency Assessment - Level 1. For more details, please follow this link.
How to qualify for EULAR Competency Assessment - Level 1
Attend the following courses with a minimum of 1 year between each course.
- Basic level: Basic EULAR MSUS Course / Basic EULAR scientifically endorsed MSUS course / Other equivalent level of Basic MSUS course by National Societies / EULAR Scientific Member Societies (acceptance is dependent on EULAR).
- Intermediate level: Intermediate EULAR MSUS Course / Intermediate EULAR scientifically endorsed MSUS course.
- Advanced level: Advanced EULAR MSUS Course and pass the exam.
- EULAR Online Introductory Ultrasound Course and pass the online exam.
EULAR grants 5 bursaries in the amount of EUR 1000 each.
- The amount of the bursary will be deducted from the course fee.
- Please apply with your CV, motivation letter, and publication list (if any) within the registration system.
